As far as I can tell this is Michael McBride s first book, which he self published in 2004 2005 in a one hundred copy paperback edition Now, the nice folks at Thunderstorm have made a hardcover edition available. The story begins with a car wreck, the dad dead at the scene, the mother died on the operating table, the child whom the doctors work on furiously in the operating room shows no sign of life for eight or ten minutes and then revives with a strange gift.Meanwhile the countryside is being hunted by a Bigfoot who needs human flesh to survive.Mr McBride combines these two stories into one terrifying series of events What a debute.

After a car accident leaves fourteen year old Derek essentially dead on an operating table for roughly eight minutes, the staff is astonished when he miraculously comes back to life The question is, did he come back the same Fast forward thirteen years later, where his story picks up Here, McBride is in his element carefully setting the tense, isolated atmosphere of a rural country emergency center, so far removed from town that it s on the verge of closing He brings in a bone chilling snowstorm, and just like that the readers begin to shiver as if they were down in that claustrophobic setting along with the charactersThis is also where he brings his characters to life Not just our main character, either you ll get a genuine feel for many of these people as their situation alters for the worse. With this particular story, I feel that much of its strength lies not so much in what IS said, but rather, in the details that are withheld Some of the questions we have are left unanswered, giving this gruesome tale an added element of mystery that will leave readers contemplating those things long after the story is finished Who or what is reveling in that snowstorm is something that to some yields multiple possibilities.Highly recommended read by an incredibly talented author
